like a Glass libretto

nose knees cheeks frozen
lungs struggling past
years of tar
and rioting against the frost

a black shopping bag dances
so much American Beauty
if only I had my blueeyed youth
and a black hat

a pool of mystery liquid
halted in the process of painting
galaxies in crystalline
toxic and wonderous

that tree catches the light
from CVS open 24 hours
varicose limbs reaching but
dead, for now

the lights dim on the pit
conductor's wand gone still
only the step step step
